Series Title: Pride
The Ugliest Sin!
What is the ugliest – most destructive – the most exceedingly sinful – sin to God? In HIS eyes what is the worst thing man can do to displease our Lord? What is the most petrifying disobedience in which man can participate – the sin God hates the most?
Let me give you a hint. It is the opposite of what He loves and appreciates the most. Any ideas? Surely you have guessed His greatest love? The scriptures say the most important commandment is:
Matthew 22:36-40 KJ2000 36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
So if the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, what is the opposite of that commandment? Is it not “Pride”? – to “love yourself” with all your heart?
Only the sin of pride had enough power to cause the most beautiful and powerful angel to fall from heaven. Only the sin of pride had enough power to deceive one third of the heavenly host into rebellion against God. Only the sin of pride was powerful enough to tempt man to sin in the Garden of Eden. Only the sin of pride had enough power to tempt Jesus in His temptation.
As a matter of fact the scripture plainly teaches there is NO sin – NO disobedience without some element of pride.
Pro 16:18 KJ2000 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Pro 11:2 KJ2000 When pride comes, then comes shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Pro 18:12 KJ2000 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.
We have seen great ministries fail because of this sin. We have seen great revivals come to an end only because of this sin. Again the scriptures say:
Job 35:12 NLT 12 And if they do cry out and God does not answer, IT IS BECAUSE OF THEIR PRIDE.
Did not the Apostle Paul say it was because of his own pride that God refused to answer his prayer:
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 KJ2000 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord three times, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for you: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
We love to quote, 2 Chronicles 7:14 where it says:
“If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and … ” [ STOP reading… ! ]
If you can not get the first part of the above verse correct there is no need in quoting the rest of the verse. If you can not humble yourself before God, you might as well stop – because all the praying in the universe will not result in the revival you seek.
However, if you do discover how to “humble yourself” before God in true child-like manor, you will not be able to stop revival for God is setting on “go” just waiting for someone to humble themselves. He is ready, but our pride is in the way.
Psa 115:1 KJ2000 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto your name give glory, for your mercy, and for your truth’s sake.
